Bopsy -- Lost!
She is about 3yrs old now and is a very sweet little cat. She is a bit wild at heart and will be very nervous and scared, but she is a survivor.
I believe she was caught out in a very bad storm that raged for hours during the afternoon of the 12th March 2008 in the KZN midlands near Ixopo. The lightening and thunder was horrendous and I believe that many animals in the area ran away and became lost.
I believe she will have run for cover and not knowing the area, she became lost in the forests around where her adopting family lived. Because the house was on a smallholding in the forest off the main road between Ixopo and Kokstad, I think she may have wandered further away from the homestead.
I have checked the area on Google earth and feel she may have drifted further towards the coast. Even if she travelled only 15 to 20 ks from where she had been living, there are several farmhouses and small white owned properties she could be scavenging near.
I do not think she will approach black people as they used to chase her from the property I was renting in Durban, when I first took her in 18 months ago. She was very wary of the africans that came near my flat behind the main house. She would scurry out and hide until the coast was clear.
She is a dear little thing and was very affectionate and had become completely tame with me. Unfortunately I had to return to Australia where I am now, and I could not leave her to fend for herself where she lived as a feral cat in Durban north near the beach. After having her as my room mate and pet for over a year I thought she deserved a loving family home. I thought I had found her the ideal home at this property outside Ixopo on a small holding away from backyards, traffic etc.
Unfortunately they have some dogs and she is completely unused to dogs and will avoid them at all costs. The people kept her in a spare room for some weeks and then she started going in and out through an open window. They say she had half accepted the other cat but was still skirting around the dogs. I take it she was fine for a month although she would be out of sight outside all day. Then this terrible storm hit the area and raged all afternoon and she has not been seen since.
They searched the area around the farm and visited surrounding neighbours to no avail. Notices were posted in Ixopo as well but she has not turned up. They even left a cat trap with food, outside for the next 3 or so weeks. It has now been about 5 weeks since she disappeared.
I am hoping that if someone sees her hanging around their back door they may feed her and take her in. I am hoping to circulate her picture and a bulletin so that I might find out if she has been found and is safe. If she finds a new home I will be happy. I am not aiming to claim her back unless she is in a holding cage at a vet or refuge, at which point I do have a friend who will fetch and care for her till I come back to South Africa in June.
