About This Organisation

Towards the end of 2004, Carol Fox (now of late) realized that she was losing her continued battle with cancer.

At that time, she on her arrival in South Africa, had pens erected in her tranquil garden in Irene to help house cats in need of temporary shelter and to re-home them. When she realized that she could no longer continue to help the cats she requested that the pens be relocated toa suitable premises so that the cats could continue to benefit from the already existing structure.

At that time Dr Bosch from the Glen Animal Clinic agreed that the pens could be erected there and thus the “Cats’9 lives Sanctuary” for adult cats were born. Since then there have been considerable extensions made to the initial five pens, with the erection of a Wendy house and installation of new spacious boxes in the pens lending more floor space and some elevation.

Since inception (2005) in excess of 200 cats have been rescued and temporarily housed in this ideal setting and most of them homed in time to wonderful caring owners. Pens and Wendy house are fully heated during the winter months. Cats are cared for and premises maintained by means of sponsorships/ donations.

THE ORGANISATION
The “cats’9lives” is a registered Non- Profit Organization, dedicated to caring for stray, unwanted and abandoned cats and kittens until such time that they are able to find permanent loving homes. This organization has no source of income and does not benefit financially from the adoption fee. Care is given by volunteers, therefore we are appealing for sponsorship of cages or donations for food, litter and veterinary fees.

ADULT CATS
We have very limited space for adult cats. When an adult cat is re-homed the adoption fee ensures that the cat is vaccinated, dewormed and sterilized. While the cats are at one of our volunteer’s homes it is fed, given lots of love and the necessary veterinary care when needed.

KITTENS
The kittens come mostly from backgrounds where the mother has disappeared or they have been dumped and left to fend for themselves. Where possible we try to keep them with their mothers until they are 6- 8 weeks old. If they are too small to feed themselves, our willing volunteers bottle or syringe feed them until they can eat solids. At this stage they come to our shelter to await adoption, which takes place from 7-8 weeks onwards. Due to the space restriction we have curtailed our numbers to about 20 kittens. The adoption fee includes 2 vaccinations, deworming, and sterilisation at 5-6 months by one of our designated veterinarians.

Since the start of Cats’9Lives in 2006 well over 1000 kittens have been adopted.

Our Mission

With the emphasis of the Organization on STERILISATION we have thus kept the number of unwanted kittens to the absolute minimum
